Someone said, after listening to my show a couple of times, that they had never heard any of the songs before! Well, if you're not into the Broadway "niche", then no, they'll all be new to you. Or maybe you tune in expecting to hear 2 hours of Comden and Green, or Rodgers and Hammerstein or, in other words, just the classics. Frankly, when I started this show back in 2012, I also thought that way! Just gimme the Fiddlers and the Oklahomas and Pajama Games and the Broadway Tried and True(s), I thought.
But after about 17 shows of that, you have to expand, dear. In fact, if all one played were the Mary Martins and Ethels and Eddie Foy, Jrs., very few listeners under the age of 102 would bother listening in. And all the good NEW stuff would atrophy under those old yellowing playbills, never see the light of day, or garner the fans (and accolades) they deserve. So that's why I carve space for "of this century" shows. Yes, they sound different, and no, they might not be your taste immediately, but given an airing and a few listens, you may actually grow to appreciate them. Sharks have to move in the water or they die, right? That's probably a myth, but it works here, so I say it's TRUE!
So I'll continue to play stuff you don't know, along with oldie goldies, flops, divas, ballads, comic relief, and the eccentrically weird. Put on your flippers and SWIM! :)
