Playlist for Sunday, March 3, 2013

Ever hear of Goldilocks?  Not the one with the bears and the porridge.  The 1958 musical...Music by Leroy Anderson (of "Sleigh Ride" and "Bugler's Holiday" fame) and lyrics by Walter Kerr (the theatre critic from the New York Herald) and his wife, Jean. It starred Elaine Stritch and Don (Graham Bell!) Ameche. The music ain't memorable for the most part, but the lyrics are witty, a bit Coward-esque. One incredible torch song that should have become a standard..."I Never Know When," sung by Ms. Stritch.  Fantastic.
The production sunk within 4 months on Broadway, possibly due its competition (West Side Story and My Fair Lady were at work down the street), or possibly its title (I mean, REALLY nothing to do with bears and porridge).  Anyway, it's a new (to me) find and I'm celebrating it with two selections this week:

Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin' (Gordon McCrea, Oklahoma!)
Look What Happened to Mabel (Bernadette Peters, Mack & Mabel)
The Company Way (Robert Morse and Sammy Smith, How to Succeed)
You'll Never Get Away from Me (Ethel Merman, Gypsy)
Come Up To My Place (Nancy Walker, On the Town)
It Might as Well Be Spring (Andrea McCardle, State Fair)
(Walking) Among My Yesterdays (Robert Goulet, The Happy Time)
Mu-Cha-Cha (Judy Holliday and Peter Gennaro, Bells are Ringing)
Conga! (Rosalind Russell and Cast, Wonderful Town)
I Never Know When (Elaine Stritch, Goldilocks)
I'm a Stranger Here Myself (Mary Martin, One Touch of Venus)
I Can't Be in Love (Don Ameche, Goldilocks)
Just You Wait (Julie Andrews, My Fair Lady)
If You Were Gay (John Tartaglia, Rick Lyon, Avenue Q)
Useless Useful Phrases (Elaine Stritch, Sail Away)

Playlist for Feb. 17, 2013

I have to admit, I'm a fan of character songs.  Few long, soul-searching ballads "do" anything for me... So of course, my playlists are over-balanced with the little, odd, humorous, quirky numbers that Broadway musical composers love (or used to love) to sprinkle about between the big iconic, emotive ones.

In keeping with that philosophy, here's this Sunday's offerings:

Le Jazz Hot (Julie Andrews, Victor/Victoria)
I Ain't Down Yet (Tammy Grimes, The Unsinkable Molly Brown)
On A Clear Day (John Cullum, On A Clear Day You Can See Forever)
Beatnik Love Affair (Grover Dale, Sail Away)
Mine (John Cullum, Kevin Kline, On the Twentieth Century)
Mira (Anna Maria Alberghetti, Carnival)
Tea for Two (Roger Rathburn, Susan Watson, No No Nanette)
Young and Healthy (Wanda Richert, Lee Roy Reams, 42nd Street)
Popular (Kristen Chenoweth, Wicked)
Oh, To Be A Movie Star (Barbara Harris, The Apple Tree)
Gooch's Song (Jane Connell, Mame)
Be Like the Blue Bird (Mickey Deems, Anything Goes)
Why Do the Wrong People Travel? (Elaine Stritch, Sail Away)

I'm Kim Corcoran, the host of 2 on the Aisle: Broadway at its Best and I'm very excited to bring Broadway to WGMC Jazz 90.1!

The first album I ever bought, after getting a "hi-fi" at the age of 11, was "Hello Dolly," the original cast recording with Carol Channing.  After memorizing every lyric, I went on to learn more!  I moved to NYC in 1978, the perfect place to develop my love for Broadway musicals (if not their ticket prices!). Now I'm back in the Rochester area, after 35 years away, and happy to share my passion for Broadway on the air.

Here I'll be posting my weekly playlists. If you'd like to listen to the show live, 2 on the Aisle: Broadway at its Best is on every Sunday afternoon, from 3 to 4pm. You can tune in, at 90.1FM, if you're in the Rochester area, or stream it live by clicking on the link on this page.

Post your feedback and requests! Or email me (see the link on the right). I'd appreciate hearing from you.
