Playlist For Sunday, March 3, 2024: Merrily We Allez Along!

Well, I've beamed back from Broadway via Amtrak (which was shockingly on time) where I cafe-ed, shopped, dined, and Sondheim-ed! It was standing room only at the Hudson Theatre at the Wednesday night performance of Merrily We Roll Along...and they've finally FIXED that damn show. Jonathan Groff was excellent in the lead role, the pace and plot "management" were spot on, and I couldn't find much to complain about. Daniel Radcliffe, described as "humble" by the NY Times playing the role of Charlie Kringas, was a little under-played. I thought he could have made the character bigger (not Broadway bigger, I mean, thankfully he didn't overact). I just didn't feel much of a stage presence, with the exception of his big SONG: "Franklin Shepard, Inc." But his is not the star part. The focus is on Jonathan, and he was superb, as was Lindsay Mendez as Mary. The set was boring, only occasionally tweaked from scene to scene, but the costumes were time-sensitive and fun, there seemed to be none of the what-year-is-it-now confusion of the original production, and it had just the right amount of editing. (Thank the Gods of Editing!)

Lindsay Mendez, Katie Rose Clarke, Jonathan Groff, and Daniel Radcliffe

The audience was young and nuts. They "ovated", they screamed, they laughed at the drop of a hat. Hey, it's Sondheim. You're supposed to be restrained/ambivalent/aloof/and a little snobby, right? You're not here for Wicked.

OTHERWISE, all went super well...from the on-time trains, the new OMNY facet of subwaying (all it takes is a tap!), the Italian food, bagels, limoncello, vintage shops, annnnd the Museum of Broadway. I was a bit hesitant to go to this place (45th and 7th), thinking it might be chock-full of tourists, but was surprised to find it mostly empty of bridge and tunnellers, and full of gorgeous original costumes, playbills, and Broadway history. Go! Cuz it's fun.

Costumes from the "One" number of A Chorus Line...

Beetlejuice, Funny Girl, Sunset Boulevard...
and I still have nothing to wear!

                                                      Dolly!

Anyway, I am back and this Sunday will be an All Things French Edition, because it was a quick and easy thing to produce, a labor of amour. For the rest of March, you can look forward to hearing the new Merrily cast recording (hopefully!), a St. Patrick's Celebration, and Spppprrriiiiiinnnng! In that order. A bientot, til dimanche!

(No) Playlist for Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024: I'm beaming to Broadway!

Taking a week off to "beam to Broadway"...so apologies, but there will be no LIVE edition of 2 On The Aisle this Sunday. On tap will be a "Best-Of" Broadway At It's Best...because I've got tickets to Merrily We Roll Along, that Sondheim used-to-be-a-flop-but-now-it's-a-smash-revival-hit! Hopefully I won't see a cast of understudies (though I'm sure they are fabulous as well), but it's supposed to star Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathon Groff, and Lindsay Mendez. Fingers crossed. I loved the original recording (no, I did NOT see the original production, tho I should have), and have high expectations.

I'll visit my favorite shops and diners and restaurants, meet up with my Philly-residing daughter, and Amtrak back and forth. Knowing Amtrak, I'll arrive home late, but ah well. I'll pretend I'm Myrna Loy (sans William Powell) on a sleeper to Los Angeles, with a hat box and stole, matching gloves/hat/clutch/attitude.

See you LIVE on March 3 with a Paris show! So salivate on that. :))))

Playlist For Sunday, February 18, 2024: Another Russell Stover Sunday

It's almost like eating the whole box of Russell Stover's. Even the ones you don't like. Because that's what we're doing: Another Valentine's Day Edition. You see, the 14th happens to fall on a Wednesday this year, so when do I haul out the Broadway Love? Before? After? So I decided to do both. I mean, this IS 2 On The Aisle, right? Twice the love! So another romantic, sappy, silly, defensive, and ardent love song special AGAIN this Sunday.

Meanwhile, I just know you're wondering how my saxophone experience is going. Well, I've been to 3 rehearsals so far (practicing every day until my lips turn to rubber...which doesn't take more than 17.5 minutes), and I just suck a little. Not as much as before. "The Horn Doctor", instrument Maintenance Man Extraordinaire (who is also our percussionist) says I need new pads. He'll be doctoring it soon. So maybe my rotten-ness isn't entirely my fault. I'll pretend that it's 50% me, 50% the instrument, and 50%...me. Whatever. I won't give up (yet).

But I digress. This week we get Diahann, Bette, Jerry, Oliver (!), Stephen, and Judy (natch). Bonbons from Forum, Grease, On Your Toes, Kiss Me Kate...hearts and flowers will definitely beat, festoon, and flow. After this Sunday though, no more LOVE. Not one drop. Not one candy-coated, semi-soft, dark or milky morsel, musically speaking.

Hugs, kisses, and "see you on the radio"...xoxox

Playlist For Sunday, February 11, 2024: Broadway Valentines (Take 1)

Okay, we've all heard the recent Phil (the infamous groundhog) Phorcast...and if we can believe his pronouncement, Spring will be arriving in about 14.5 hours. Otherwise, I'm suing that prognosticator of pronosticators. Getting us all hyped up for an early Spring and then not delivering? That would be absolutely unfair and heartbreaking, Phil.

Luckily, we have some hearts and flowers to distract us. It's Cupid's turn now, and he may have more oomph (and definitely more weapons) than a rodent with suspicious meteorology in his "quiver".

So let's celebrate LOVE. And we're going to do a double celebration, with 2 (count 'em, 2!) Valentine Editions. In Love (and a couple of OUT of Love) songs by the score. Sappy ballads, joyous proclamations, protestations, hopes, wishes, denials, vows...weeze got 'em! So I hope you like LOVE. It's here for 2 weeks!

That's going to include (but not be limited to) Nathan Lane, Marilyn Monroe, Elaine Stritch, Barbara Cook, Judy (of course), Gene, Ethel, and Doris. Because LOVE is Priority #1 in almost every Broadway musical. And almost every song ever. These Valentine deals write themselves.

So DO join me for Chapter 1 of our Broadway Valentine Edition. Chapter 2 will follow on apace on February 18...and both will offer just the right romantic soupcon (and well-targeted arrows)!
