Playlist for November 10, 2019: Broadway Bakery

I am late to carve this week's playlist! But I have a great excuse: The Real Broadway. Yes, I jetblued to the East Side, the West Side, the North Side, and the ...South Side, back to Manhattan, that dear old, dirty town. For over-crowded subway rides, great Mexican/Italian/Polish food (just not all at once) and a few decent shows.

Betrayal (yes, a play. No music. Incredible, right?) was wowowowow intense. Tootsie was better than expected, tho the Marriott Theatre is an organizational nightmare. Chicago was...a little old and tired actually. Yes, Charlotte d'Amboise is absolutely incredible at the age of what, 54? But Amra Faye Wright is almost 60, and I'm sorry but it shows. Maybe not to the mezzanine crowd, but I was front row, stage left. Is there an unwritten law that says these 2 Chicago leads must always be played by actresses "of a certain age"? Weird. Also Chicago: Update your costumes. They must be from the first revival performances of the 1990s. Stretch pants?

Re the Toots: Santino Fontana was great fun to watch. Unfortunately, Sarah Stiles was MIA and sent in an understudy, but yes...it WAS a matinee. The book is very clever, and of course even when Yazbek is in Full Monty silly mode, he writes right. They kept enough of the original Tootsie lines (the good ones) to remind you of how great the movie was, but I would have left out the old saw at the end: I was a better man as a woman...you know the one. Didn't need it. We got it by the 3rd scene.

So this is a thrown together, one bowl wonder of a Sunday 2 On The Aisle playlist. The dough is set to rise, the loaf pans are greased, the stand mixer poised! A Broadway Baker's Dozen. Plus Bacall, plus Cy, plus Charity Heart Valentine. Back to using Broadway binoculars, gazing downstate. :)
