Times Square...back in the day!

Circa 1900, when it was called Longacre Square.
The first "ball drop" occurred in 1907.

 Flash forward to 1937,
and the tradition of the Ball Drop
and celebrating New Years Eve amidst thousands of strangers
had become a tradition.

 Circa 1978...above Russ Brown,
Superintendant of One Time Square
checking his hi-tech Mickey for the correct time
to drop that ball.
Just 100 lights on the first one!

 1956

 1938

 As compared to today's craziness,
and "crystal ball!"
A long way from Longacre...
