Natasha, Pierre And The Great Comet Of 1812
began life in 2012 off Broadway,
with music by David Malloy.
It jumped to Broadway, to The Imperial Theatre in 2016,
where the stage was radically adapted to allow
action to "land in the laps" of play-goers.
All based on Part 5 of Tolstoy's War And Peace
(better read up!).
Above, Josh Groban in his Broadway debut,
when he played Pierre,
and below, Phillippa Su as Natasha.
Below, its fantastic setting when it appeared at the
Loeb Drama Center in
Cambridge, MA, in late 2015.
Photos from Jason Robert Brown's
Bridges Of Madison County,
which starred Steven Pasquale and Kelli O'Hara.
It opened in February of 2014, and didn't last long,
but ballads like "Wondering" deserve a second chance.
Below, Kelli with Cass Morgan,
who I saw back in 1980 in Pump Boys, when she played
Prudie Cupp.
The novel it was based on has been called
(by Ben Brantley of the New York Times)
"Fifty Shades of Vanilla",
but the musical aimed at deeper meanings,
and both Kelly and Steven's performances were praised.
