Playlist for Sunday, January 8, 2017: Hello, I Must Be Going

Back from near death. And ain't it fitting.

As I type this, the dregs of 2016 are still doing me in. Recouping from:
a.) a scratched cornea (did I really need to get up close and personal with an aloe vera plant?)
b.) a horrid cold/congestion/coughing up a lung
c.) post-holiday stupefaction caused by too many carbs (hey, don't just read GIN into this, okay?), too few workouts, and familial guilt in all forms.

And in that frame of mind, I'll admit to a rather bittersweet playlist perspective. More than its share of ballads and not a Jerry Herman parade (always with the glockenspiels, Jerry?) in the bunch. Well, ONE!  We gotta have one.

But goodbye to that stinkeroo of a year.  And hello to a brand new, not yet tainted/corroded/coughing up a lung year.  Hence our theme. Goodbye (Little Me). Please Hello (Pacific Overtures). Hello! (The Book Of Mormon). Goodbye! (The Producers).  Thank the gods of theatre for different punctuation. Otherwise, wouldn't they all !sound! the same?

And then, of course, there's Debbie to say goodbye to, which we will do. Also fitting is the playing of Irene, because Debbie brought Carrie along for that 1973 Broadway revival. There she is, in the chorus, singing in period dress with her mother, the star.

We'll end with Angela, tho. Despite an awful year, and only slight hope for a better one, we gotta Open a New Window. Thanks, Jerry.  And thanks, Broadway.
