So Sue Me!

The 1992 revival of Guys And Dolls...
winner of the Best Musical Revival Tony and a
Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival.
The most successful remounting of this show
since the original production done in 1950.

Such young faces!
(Well, it WAS 27 years ago!)

A rave review from Frank Rich of the Times
(he called it "Genius!"),
and it lasted almost a year on Broadway.
By comparison, the next revival, done in 2009, fell flat...
"How can anything so zippy be so tedious?" said The Post.
Above, Faith's Miss Adelaide, and Nathan as his self-chosen namesake,
Nathan Detroit.
Below, Peter as Sky Masterson,
and Josie as Sister Sarah.

Additional music was added to the original score
for "Havana", "Bushel And A Peck", and "Take Back Your Mink",
written by Michael Starobin.

Costumes (striped suits, Hot Box scanties, and GREAT shoes)
by William Ivey Long,
set design by Tony Walton,
and direction by Jerry Zaks
(3 more reasons this revival was a smash!).
I'm actually unsure of the photo below;
it may not be from the 1992 revival on Broadway,
but the set looks so great, I had to include it!
There have been A LOT of revivals!
City Center mounted short-run revivals in 1955, 65, and 66,
and some of their notable stars included,
Walter Mathau, Alan King and Jan Murray as Nathans...
and Jerry Orbach once played Sky!
A 1976 Broadway run starred Robert Guillaume and featured
Motown inspired arrangements.
In a hoped-for 1982 West End revival,
we almost got a chance to see Laurence Olivier as Sky,
but ill health got in the way, and the production was shelved.

Those young 1990 leads,
with hair to match,
mugging it up.

Al Hirschfeld's marvelous take
on this revival.
