Broadway Mothers: Stage mothers, Donna Reed supportive mothers, Jewish mothers, disappointed mothers, stalwart/steady/glamorous, over-protective/guilt-ridden/saint-like...as in life, as ON Broadway! And we gotta salute 'em all this Sunday, because it's Mother's Day, so consider THIS your alarm bell. Get a gift, plan a brunch, grow some fast posies, or bake a cake...do SOMETHING nice for Mom!
And for those of us who no longer have Mom to advise us or chat with us (or cry, joke, pester, FILL IN YOUR BLANK together with), at least we have all those memories. My mom vacuumed in high heels. She over-cooked vegetables. She had hats that matched her coats that matched her purses and gloves. She sucked at golf. She under-estimated her charm. Great legs, a waspy 21-inch waist. All her own teeth. And lots of neurosis. Which made her maddeningly lovely. She would have made a great character in a musical. Or at least that's how I remember her.
So like Mamma Rose, or Mrs. Darling, Minnie Marx, or Matron "Mamma" Morton, cheers to La Mamma! Raise a toast with me, come Sunday.
